Aquatic Technical Operator – SISSS00110 (Skill Sets)

The recommended minimum standards for public swimming pools and other still water environments are based on AQF nationally accredited units of competency within the SIS Sport, Fitness and Recreation Training Package.

Note: Advertised course costs are for online enrolments only. We also offer these courses via RPL, Face to Face and group sessions (Additional costs may apply).

NSW

The Office of Local Government has published Practice Note No. 15 – Water Safety to assist council sand public swimming facilities strengthen their water safety functions and responsibilities within a risk management framework.

The recommended minimum standards for public swimming pools and other still water environments are based on AQF nationally accredited units of competency within the SIS Sport, Fitness and Recreation Training Package.

Training highlighted under the Practice Note consists of the following units of competency or equivalent:

SISSS00110 – Aquatic Technical Operator

  • BSBRSK401 – Identify risk and apply risk management processes
  • SISCAQU001 – Test pool water quality
  • SISCAQU003 – Maintain aquatic facility plant and equipment
  • SISCAQU004 – Develop and implement pool water maintenance procedures
  • SISCAQU005 – Develop and implement aquatic facility maintenance procedures

Cost – $600


VIC

The Water quality guidelines for public aquatic facilities – Managing public health risks provides guidance that the level of operator training should be proportionate to the risk of the facility.

Operators of high-risk aquatic facilities should undertake more extensive training than those who operate lower risk facilities.

The minimum standard for aquatic facilities would be for staff to undertake a short course offered by an industry body or registered training organisation These typically cover the key water quality-oriented competencies of the Certificate III or IV in Swimming Pool and Spa Service

IRLearning recommends the following units be delivered for Victoria as an absolute minimum:

  • BSBRSK401 – Identify risk and apply risk management processes
  • SISCAQU001 – Test pool water quality
  • SISCAQU003 – Maintain aquatic facility plant and equipment
  • SISCAQU004 – Develop and implement pool water maintenance procedures
  • SISCAQU005 – Develop and implement aquatic facility maintenance procedures

Cost – $600


QLD

The Water quality guidelines for public aquatic facilities provides guidance that the level of operator training should be proportionate to the risk of the facility.

The level of operator training should be proportionate to the risk of the facility. Operators of high-risk aquatic facilities should undertake more extensive training than those who operate lower risk facilities.

The minimum standard for aquatic facilities would be for staff to undertake a short course offered by an industry body or registered training organisation These typically cover the key water quality-oriented competencies of the Certificate III or IV in Swimming Pool and Spa Service

SA

The Code of Practice for Public Swimming Pools in South Australia provides guidance that the level of operator training should be proportionate to the risk of the facility.

The main facility Groups are:

Group 3 facilities: Local Community Swimming Pools. E.g. School Pools, Learn to Swim pools and community pools

Group 4 facilities: Supplementary provision to core business. E.g. Caravan Parks, hotels, schools, health clubs, retirement villages and resorts.

Training highlighted under the Code for Group 3 and 4 facilities consists of the following units of competency or equivalent:

  • BSBRSK401 – Identify risk and apply risk management processes
  • SISCAQU001 – Test pool water quality
  • SISCAQU003 – Maintain aquatic facility plant and equipment
  • SISCAQU004 – Develop and implement pool water maintenance procedures

Cost – $480


WA

The Code of Practice for the Design, Construction, Operation, Management & Maintenance of Aquatic provides guidance that the level of operator training should be proportionate to the risk of the facility.

Operators of Group 2, 3 and 4 facilities are required to ensure that the ongoing operation of aquatic facility water quality, plant, and equipment service and maintenance, is undertaken by, or done under the direction of a technical operator who has completed an approved training program.

Group 2 Facilities generally include; schools, learn-to-swim centres, learn-to-dive pools, nursing homes, hospitals & hydrotherapy/ physiotherapy use pools.

Group 3 Facilities generally include; discrete user access of group 1, 2, or 4 aquatic facilities (AF) by community/swimming groups, or; commercial developments for guests such as hotels, motels, resorts, serviced apartments, caravan parks, health clubs, mine sites, recreational camp-sites, lodging houses, staff/student accommodation complexes & places restricted to adult only access.

Group 4 Facilities include; small temporary accommodation developments such as bed and breakfast and farm-stay facilities, and permanent/ sem i-permanent residential developments with 30 or more dwelling nits/apartments and retirement/lifestyle villages that do not allow non-residential based club/member access to AF.

The approved training program for Group 2, 3 and 4 facilities consist of the following units of competency or equivalent:

  • SISCAQU001 – Test pool water quality
  • SISCAQU003 – Maintain aquatic facility plant and equipment
  • SISCAQU004 – Develop and implement pool water maintenance procedures

Cost – $380


ACT

The ACT Public swimming and spa pools code of practice 1999 do not list credentials to operate facilities, however the minimum standard for aquatic facilities would be for staff to undertake a short course offered by an industry body or registered training organisation.

The minimum standard for aquatic facilities would be for staff to undertake a short course offered by an industry body or registered training organisation These typically cover the key water quality-oriented competencies of the Certificate III or IV in Swimming Pool and Spa Service

IRLearning recommends the following units be delivered for the Australian Capital Territory as an absolute minimum:

  • SISCAQU001 – Test pool water quality
  • SISCAQU003 – Maintain aquatic facility plant and equipment
  • SISCAQU004 – Develop and implement pool water maintenance procedures
  • SISCAQU005 – Develop and implement aquatic facility maintenance procedures

The NT Department of Health – Public Health Guidance for Public Aquatic facilities do not list credentials to operate facilities, however the minimum standard for aquatic facilities would be for staff to undertake a short course offered by an industry body or registered training organisation.

The minimum standard for aquatic facilities would be for staff to undertake a short course offered by an industry body or registered training organisation These typically cover the key water quality-oriented competencies of the Certificate III or IV in Swimming Pool and Spa Service
